Four more wins on two continents for Civic Type R TCR
The Honda Civic Type R TCR enjoyed another ultra-successful weekend with four race wins and three pole positions on two continents as the JAS Motorsport-built touring car continued to close on several key championship crowns.
TCR South America
Leonel Pernia cemented his championship lead with his fifth win of the season at El Pinar, Uruguay, but he was denied a second podium due to late contact in Race Two.
Pernia, who qualified second, beat his pole-sitting team-mate Nelson Piquet Jr off the line and headed a one-two finish for Honda YPF Racing on Sunday morning.
From ninth on Race Two’s partially-reversed grid, he was fourth with a lap and a half to go, but side-by-side contact from a rival caused race-ending damage to his Civic. Piquet was 11th, helping to maintain Honda YPF Racing’s Team’s Championship lead.
Tiago and Mariano Pernia took best results of fifth and ninth while Adrian Chiriano twice won the Trophy class; his Race Two success coming in a season’s-best sixth overall. Porthack Racing’s Enzo Gianfratti was second in class in Race Two.
TCR Asia
Diego Moran made a superb return to the series he last contested in 2019 with a double victory at Sepang, Malaysia.
The Ecuadorian driver [check] qualified his Delta Garage Racing Civic on pole position and was untouchable across the pair of races. Hayden Haikl retired from the opener and did not start Sunday’s race.
Super Taikyu
M&K Racing launched themselves back into title contention with a dominant ST-TCR class win in the five-hour race at Autopolis.
Mitsuhiro Endo, Shinji Nakano and Jack Young led an all-Honda 1-2-3 in qualifying and led the entire race barring pitstop cycles. While they remain third in the points, they have significantly reduced the gap to the series lead.
The sister car, driven by Kenta Omiya, Koji Yamanishi, Yosuke Yamaki and Thanasowanat Phongsinnatchaachun started second but did not finish. Fett Racing’s Toshiro Tsukada, Makoto Morita, Hiroshi Nakamura and Masahi Omura started third.
TCR Eastern Europe
Giacomo Ghermandi was cruelly robbed of a podium finish with a lap-and-a-half to go at Most, Czechia, when the MM Motorsport driver, who had started fourth, was fired off the circuit from behind while running second.
In recovery mode on Sunday he was involved in a multi-car incident at the opening sequence of corners midway through the race, leading to a double-retirement.
