Race win and title success for Civic Type R TCR at Monza

The most thrilling victory of the season so far plus a well-deserved title success in TCR Europe was the highlight of another strong weekend for Honda Civic Type R TCR teams across the world.

TCR Europe
PSS Racing Team’s Franco Girolami kept his title hopes alive with a superb win at Monza; setting his first pole position in the series in his JAS Motorsport-built Honda Civic Type R TCR and resisting huge pressure from behind over the final two laps.

A damp Race Two was, if anything, even more thrilling as Girolami picked his way through from 10th on the partially-reversed grid to lead by half-distance.

Despite crossing the line first, he was later penalised 30s for passing another car under waved yellow-flags and dropped to 19th, meaning he holds second place in the standings ahead of the season finale in Barcelona.

Teenager Isidro Callejas became one of the youngest ever TCR title winners as the 17-year-old Spaniard snared the Rookie Trophy class in Race Two to be crowned as category champion for the Brutal Fish Racing Team, having been punted out of Race One by his chief rival.

There was success too for his team-mate Jack Young, a JAS Motorsport Development Driver. After a first-lap puncture ruined a front-row qualifying performance on Saturday, he rebounded magnificently to rise from ninth to third in Race Two.

The Northern Irish driver now sits third in both the TCR Europe Trophy and Junior Trophy standings and with a strong chance of winning both in Spain.

Diamond Trophy honours went to PSS Racing Team’s Viktor Davidovksi in Race One after erstwhile points leader Martin Ryba’s Brutal Fish Honda was spun into the wall on the first lap after contact from behind. Neither finished Race Two.

Baltic Endurance Championship
ALM Customer Racing ended their season with a deserved podium finish in the six-hour race at Bikernieki, Latvia.

Team regulars Sven Karuse and Peeter Peek were joined in the older FK2 Civic Type R TCR by World Rallycross star Reinis Nitiss and qualified fourth in the TCR division, but the trio raced hard to come home second in class and third overall.

Their results mean the team finished the season, which began with a victory, third in both the TCR and overall standings.
